Using survey data from regions of Cambodia, Nicaragua, Peru, Uganda, and Vietnam, the study examines the relationship between sudden- and gradual-onset climate events and migration, hypothesizing that this relationship is mediated by the adaptive capacity of affected individuals.
This paper examines migration decision-making and individual perceptions of different types of environmental change (sudden vs. gradual environmental events) with a focus on five developing countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, Uganda, Nicaragua, and Peru.
The Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia was established in May 1993 to support training and research in environmental and resource economics. Its goal is to strengthen local capacity for the economic analysis of environmental problems so that researchers can provide sound advice to policymakers. The program uses a networking approach to provide not only financial support but meetings, resource persons, access to literature, publication outlets, and opportunities for comparative research across its ten member countries.
Past analysis of protected areas (PAs) have been inward looking and concentrated on their conservation management needs ï'' ie the protection and maintenance of the natural systems. The PAD review is looking outward at the linkages with key economic sectors and with community development. Conservation will best be achieved through integration of PAs with their surrounding economic landscapes so that they are recognised as a critical development strategy requiring adequate investment.
The authors suggest that examination of the poverty-environment nexus in one country may not be generalizable to others.
